A 1945 autopsy specimen from a female aged 30 who had had hepatitis fifteen years before death. Six months before dying she had a haematemesis followed three months later by jaundice and further haematemesis. She died in hepatic coma. There is no history of alcoholism or exposure to toxic chemicals. The spleen was enlarged and there was mural thrombus in the portal vien.
